Choral Workshop 2018
Christopher Wood
Requiem
Saturday 27 January 2018
9.30am–5.00pm
St Michael’s Without, Bath

Christopher Wood’s Requiem is a compelling and highly accessible piece with echoes of both Rutter and Puccini in its romanticism, which reflects on the nation’s emotions at the passing of the Queen Mother in 2002. In preparation for its first West Country performance, we invite you to join us for our annual workshop – a day of fun, singing and camaraderie, and a highlight of our year – as musical director Nigel Perrin takes us through the work with his customary warmth, humour and musical agility.

Christopher Wood
Requiem
Saturday 24 March 2018
7.30pm  |  Bath Abbey

Two exciting works – vividly contrasting yet united by a warm and moving humanity – will echo around the beautiful fan vaulting of Bath Abbey this spring, as we bring Rachmaninov’s rich, immersive Liturgy and Christopher Wood’s compelling Requiem to life – the latter in its first West Country performance. A lyrical and highly accessible piece, with romantic echoes of both Rutter and Puccini, Christopher Wood’s Requiem reflects on the nation’s emotions at the passing of the Queen Mother in 2002.

Vivaldi Gloria
Handel Dixit Dominus
& Suite from Water Music
Saturday 23 June 2018
7.30pm  |  Bath Abbey

For our prestigious summer concert, we will perform two iconic baroque works: the hugely popular Gloria by Vivaldi, bursting with joyous melodies, and Handel’s exuberant and uplifting setting of the psalm Dixit Dominus – composed when he was just 22 and learning his trade in Italy. Together with our young professional soloists, we welcome back Margaret Faultless and her outstanding authentic period orchestra – Music for Awhile – who will open the concert with a Suite from Handel’s all-time favourite Water Music.

African Sanctus
David Fanshawe
Saturday 27 October 2018
7.30pm  |  Kingswood Theatre, Bath

African Sanctus is the best known work by British composer and ethnomusicologist David Fanshawe. Widely acclaimed for its passion, colour, vivacity and raw emotion, it juxtaposes and interweaves the Latin text of the Mass with traditional African music heard and recorded by the composer on his epic journey across Africa in the late 1960s. Adding irrepressible vibrancy to the singers and recordings will be the amazing percussion group – BackBeat – who will open the show with a demonstration of its flare and virtuosity.
